State Police say Steven S. Smith, a senior at the school, is charged with criminal sale of a controlled substance - a felony. Investigators say Smith gave another student two oxycodone pills in the school bathroom-- a transaction that was witnessed by a school security officer.
The law does not require that money exchange hands in order for a criminal sale charge to be applied.
State Police say that another student, Matthew Landers, also a senior, is charged with criminal possession of a controlled substance - a misdemeanor.
Smith was arraigned in Deerfield town court Monday and is free on $5,000 bail as the case progresses.

HUNTINGTON WOODS In response to the Sept. 19 editorial 'Flush this legislation,' I'd like to share a different point of view.
The 'several groups of people' the editorial so lightly notes include tens of thousands of Michigan residents who have a serious need to be provided access to bathrooms. These are Michigan residents with fecal or urinary incontinence due to a medical condition; anyone with an inflammatory bowel disease; and pregnant women.
As a Crohn's patient, I spent nearly $3,000 online shopping for Christmas presents last year due to the fear of being denied access to a restroom while out shopping a very real fear as I have repeatedly been denied access.
The question was raised if this really affects Michigan retailers, and the answer is yes. In fact, the Michigan Retailers Association has endorsed the bill. It recognizes that across the nation there are 1.4 million Americans with Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis, and those suffering in Michigan are choosing to stay home and shop online
