Narcotics officer Jason Bryant was at the Blackwell-Thurman Criminal Justice Center waiting to testify Thursday in a felony cocaine possession trial when he left his gun in the bathroom stall, the Austin American-Statesman reported Friday.
Sean Mannix, commander of the organized crime division, said a citizen found the gun and reported it to sheriff's deputies, but Bryant noticed the weapon missing and retrieved it from the restroom before the deputies arrived.
Mannix said an internal affairs investigation has been opened into the incident.
Police Chief Art Acevedo said the officer told superiors that he had set the gun down in the bathroom because he found it difficult to use the toilet with the weapon weighing down his pants
